Who is UPASI
"UPASI was established in 1893 and a Scientific Department was set up in 1903.This became the Tea Experimental Station in 1926 in Devarshola, Gudalur. This was shifted to VALPARAI, Coimbatore Dist. and renamed it as Tea Research Institute in 1964. In 1999 Tea Research Foundation was established and financially supported by Tea Board of India and UPASI. The foundation carries out research and other scientific work connected with the cultivation, production and processing of tea and other related aspects. At present UPASI TRF comprises the Tea Research Institute at Valparai and its six Regional Centres at Coonoor & Gudalur in Tamil Nadu, Vandiperiyar, Munnar & Meppadi in Kerala and Koppa in Karnataka. Regional centres offer free advisory services and undertake analytical services to all corporate and also small growers. In Valparai, the main centre, research activities on all aspects are undertaken under 6 divisions such as Botany/ Agronomy, Chemistry, Entomology/Residue, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology/Biotechnology and Tea Technology. The institute also offers advisory and analytical services to the estates located in and around Valparai. Laboratories at Valparai and Coonoor have been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for testing and calibration Laboratories (NABL) for their compliance as per ISO/IEC 17025, which is followed internationally. The institute also undertakes field bioefficacy trials and residue estimation in tea necessary for the registration of pesticides."
