DEFINITIONS
Hectare
Hectare is commonly used to measure land area in India.  One hectare is 10,000 square meters or 2.47 acres (another common measure of land area).
Clonal Tea
Clonal refers to the method of controlled breeding of plants to produce superior results.  Clonal teas come from plants bred for specific qualities, and are therefore some of the most sought after teas.
Arabica and Robusta Coffee
While there are several different coffee species, two main species of coffee are cultivated today.  Coffea arabica, known as Arabica coffee, accounts for 75-80 percent of the world's production.  Coffea canephora, known as Robusta coffee, accounts for about 20 percent and differs from the Arabica coffees in terms of taste. Robusta is generally considered to be inferior to Arabica, but, for example, special washed Robusta is becoming an important additive to expresso blends.
Areca Nut
Areca nut, strictly a drupe not a nut, is chewed along with betel leaf and is also used in Ayurvedic medicines.  The arca palm is one of several other products (cardamom, vanilla and black pepper) grown on Kelagur estate in addition to coffee and tea.
Black Tea
Black tea is a variety of tea produced in India.  Black tea is generally stronger in flavour than the oolong, green and white varieties of tea.
UPASI
United Planters' Association of South India or UPASI is the organization representing plantation owners in South India.
S.795
S.795 is the seed material indigenously developed at CCRI (Central Coffee Research Institute), which has gained the confidence of the planting community and large areas have been expanded with this material. S.795 had excellent resistance to leaf rust, which is considered to be a major disease in coffee that was responsible for the demise of coffee in Sri Lanka.
CTC Tea
The CTC (Cut Tear Curl) method of tea processing sends the leaves through a series of rollers that tear and break the leaves prior to fermentation. This method is used to produce teas that infuse quickly and produce a strong, robust liquor.
